Diabetes ?? Type 1 ...Type 2...What is that? I just thought this was a disease older people got. I really had no idea what it is or that there are different types. Well that idea changed about 11 years ago, when my daughter, only 4 years old, was suddenly diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. She was always so healthy and active, such a normal little girl. How in tarnations did this happen to my daughter? I did not know any one in my family with this disease. I?ve stopped worrying about the past and how or why this happened to her. Now is the time to work on the present. How do we handle the everyday struggles that affect our whole family. I know it is super hard for her and she does not want to deal with it, but the truth of the matter is that she has to deal with it every minute of the day. Gabriela has to prick her fingers several times a day to check her blood sugar levels, she has to know how many carbohydrates she eats , she has to give herself a shot of insulin every time she eats or any time her blood sugar is too high. Not keeping her sugar at good levels raises her chances of developing the devastating effects of diabetes such as kidney failure, blindness, nerve damage, amputations, heart attack and stroke.
Gabriela does not allow diabetes to get in the way of her living a normal teenage life. The insulin she takes every day is not a cure it is what allows her to be alive.
Now lets look at the future? WOW wouldn?t it be great for her to wake up one morning to know she is perfectly healthy? To no longer have to poke herself with needles, no longer have to feel bad when her blood sugars are fluctuating. You can help find a cure by making a donation to JDRF (The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). JDRF is the largest worldwide organization dedicated to finding a cure for diabetes. In a typical year, over 80% of every dollar raised goes directly to research and research education.
There are two ways you can help make a difference for Gabriela and others like her:
1. Join Gabriela?s Team, which includes family and friends who collect donations and walk with us.
2. Send a tax-deductible contribution to the address below . Please make checks payable to JDRF. Credit card donations to support our team can also be made with an online donation
Our goal is to raise $3,000 for diabetes research. Together one step at a time a cure will be found.
Thank You in advance for your support and we hope to see you at the Walk on November 12th at Balboa Park.

This year, I'll be taking part in JDRF's Walk to Cure Diabetes, along with one-half million other walkers across the country, as we try to reach our goal of raising $89 million.
Type 1, or juvenile diabetes, is a devastating disease that affects millions of people, a large and growing percentage of them children.
There is some good news, though. JDRF is our best hope for finding a cure. It funds more type 1 diabetes research than any other charity worldwide and it's making progress along many promising paths toward better treatments and a cure.
Now, more than ever, you can make a crucial difference. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible? Together, we can make the cure a reality!
