Welcome to our JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes Team Page!
We are putting one foot in front of the other to help achieve JDRF's mission: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. The money our JDRF Walk Team raises will go directly to support this life-changing research.
Whimsical Publications will be walking and raising money in honor of one of our own: Sharon Donovan.
Sharon's story is a sad but heroic one, and it says a lot about what those who have Type 1 diabetes have to endure.
Sharon lost her eyesight when she was in her twenties. That didn't stop her. She continued to grow, to learn how to cope with this aspect of the disease, and to do what she enjoyed: to write.
Then the disease attacked: she had a major setback, a heart attack, and almost died. She fought back before the diabetes let her know it wasn't finished with her. She suffered a stroke. Again, she fought back. She showed her Type 1 diabetes that she wasn't going to simply lie down and take what it was thrown at her. She grew stronger and continued to write.
Unfortunately, Type 1 diabetes has a way of waiting, of slinking off into the shadows like a cat of the night until the right opportunity arises before jumping into the mix again. This happened to Sharon. She was put in the hospital with heart and breathing problems. But, like before, she fought back to a point where she was stable enough to go to a rehab facility.
In the end, Type 1 diabetes won.
The disease ravaged her body to the point she had nothing left to give. Sharon is writing her stories in heaven now, never having to worry about watching what she eats or her blood sugar levels again.
If you would like to help WP acheive our goal of $1000, and to help JDRF find a cure for this devastating disease, a disease which robs so many people of their eyesight, their kidneys, their limbs, their lifestyle, click on the 'Donate to this Team or a Team Member' button and give what you can. It's simple, fast and fun! You can also join our team and walk as a virtual walker if you are not able to attend the event in Brevard County, Florida. The key thing is to make a difference and see an end to Type 1 diabetes in our lifetime.
