Who is my #1 with type 1? The one and only Danny Jackson. Once you meet Danny you know he is one of a kind, witty, and sweet. Danny likes to be goofy, play with his friends and has a passion for sports. Danny is like any other first grader, and also has type 1 diabetes. When he was three years old he wanted to drink water all the time and always had to use the bathroom. His preschool teacher thought he seemed off so we brought him in to get his ears checked! The day in the pediatrician's office our life changed forever when the doctor informed us his blood sugar was over 500 and that he had type 1 diabetes. This is quite a shock when you walk into the office with no health issues and are handed a life changing diagnosis.
Even at the time of his diagnosis, Danny was still full of energy and kept the nurses and doctors laughing at the hospital. He has truly taken in it in stride and has honestly complained very little about it. In the hospital, Mark and I learned about our new way of life taking care of Danny. We learned how to poke his little finger 8-12 times per day to check his blood sugar levels. We learned how to draw up tiny amounts of insulin into a syringe to inject Danny with 4-5 times per day. We learned how to figure out the carbohydrate content of EVERY single thing Danny would be eating. Finally, we learned how to deal with low and high blood sugars which can be dangerous and a constant concern of all with type 1 diabetes.
Please consider joining or donating to our team for the Jacksonville Walk to Cure Diabetes to make life better for all with this disease. JDRF remains committed to finding a cure, but also to improving treatment and prevention of the disease. We wish for all with this disease to have improved treatments so that blood sugar is not a constant concern with exercise, eating, sleeping, and otherwise fulfilling their life's goals. For career day at school Danny went as a Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer. Let's find a cure to make this dream a reality!
Thank you so much for your time and consideration. See you at the walk!!
