Progress: 100%

Join our team in the fight to help create a world without type 1 diabetes!

The question JDRF posed this year was this ....who is your Number 1?  My #1 is my son and little hero, Connor, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 4 years of age.  Connor just turned 9 and he is the bravest, strongest little boy I know.  I walk for him, his dad walks for him, his sisters and brother walk for him, his cousins, aunt and uncle, as well as many special friends and Connor's best buddies walk because Connor is their #1.

Some people on our team this year I haven't even met but they know my son, Charlie, or one of my daughters, Mandy or Megan, and so their #1 is one of my older children.  Nonetheless, these individuals are walking because someone they care about has a family member with an incurable disease and they want to offer their support.

This will be our 5th year partiticpating with JDRF's Walk for a Cure and yet the emotions of this day never waiver.  It is humbling, emotional, and the love you feel by the outpouring of support from people you know as well as those that you don't is unexplanable.  People give their time to participate or help.  Others have tried very hard to raise money through donations.  Some don't have deep pockets yet those are usually the ones who give most freely.  How do you explain to someone how much that means?

I remember our first year at the walk in 2010 (Connor was diagnosed in August of 2009).  We participated.  We took our group photo.  We walked...but as Gary and I started to make our way toward the festivities I stopped dead in my tracts and didn't want to move.  I proceeded to bawl my eyes out and didn't want anyone to see.  I had been going through the motions of the day and all of a sudden it hit me.  I had a child with a life threatening disease for which there is no cure.  Never did I envision that in my life, yet alone with a child of mine.  Maybe walking for someone else's, but not my baby.  I think that day was the actual day that the reality of Connor's diagnosis really sunk in.

If you have a child, you understand that you would do anything for them.  You would take an illness.  You would take the pain they have.  You would take their sorrows.  You would even take their disease, regardless of the outcome, so long as they could have a happy, healthy life.

God chose me to be Connor's mom, type 1 diabetes, celiac disease, and anything else that gets thrown our way and I won't give up.  Connor isn't worried.  I will carry that load.

Do you have a Number 1?  Can you help support JDRF with a donation to further research for a cure?  Please help if you can and thank you from the very bottom of our hearts.
