Thank you for visiting Team Pickle's Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraising page! We'll be taking part in this year's Walk to raise funds to improve the lives of ALL people affected by Type 1 Diabetes. As you know, the last two years have been a challenge, trying to adapt to the daily challenge that is raising a child with diabetes...especially with someone as young as Jackson. Children with Type 1 must eat on a VERY strict schedule. One of Jackson's favorite "free" (a carb-free snack) snacks is pickles. He eats A LOT of pickles, which is how he earned the nickname Pickle.
Type 1 Diabetes is an auto-immune disease that is difficult to manage and life-threatening...and it never goes away. For some reason, Jackson's little body attacked and killed his pancreas. Therefore, I act as his pancreas. He can eat the same foods as other children, but must get a very precise amount of artificial insulin to cover it. He gets 12 finger pricks a day, and is currently on an insulin pump, which delivers insulin subcutaneously to his body and must be monitored very closely. Additionally, 1 in 20 children with Type 1 will die in their sleep from a low blood sugar, which is why we check his blood sugar at 10 p.m., 12 a.m, 2 a.m. and sometimes 4 a.m. every night. We don't get a whole lot of sleep around here.
One benefit of Jackson being diagnosed so young is that he will see so many medical advances in his lifetime, and hopefully a cure. We look forward to a day when we can sleep without worry, and eat without a calculator! By supporting our Walk to Cure Diabetes, you'll be making a difference for Jackson and the millions of others living with type 1 diabetes.
Thank you so much for your support!
