Welcome to my personal JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraising page! I'll be taking part in this years walk to raise funds to improve the lives of all people affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D).
Payton, my daughter, was diagnosed on July 18, 2012 with type 1 diabetes. Payton is now 7 years old and in the second grade. That is why I call this walk, Payton's Promise. Her dad and I promise to help her live life to the fullest with this new challenge.
This year with diabetes has created many life adjustments. Payton continues to amaze us with her strength and cooperation. She fully understands that her daily routine consists of blood sugar checks, carb counting, and insulin injections. Payton is now figuring out her carb intake/insulin dosages and recording them. She has also moved from insulin syringes to the insulin pen which allows her to do her own injections. She feels much more independent and in control now than a year ago. She can even tell you carb counts on some of her favorite foods: grapes, yogurt, and tator tots! She impressed her nutritionist at the last doctor's appointment by giving her her daily menu for the previous day including the carb counts !
Payton has not let this diagnosis slow her down. This year she has begun horseback riding and is about to start her fall soccer season. She is our "little bundle of energy". This summer she did her normal swimming, biking, etc. Activity really keeps her blood sugars in her acceptable range so we encourage her to be active. Her brother enjoys chasing her around too!
Of course, there are times that this diagnosis makes us all feel like we are on a rollercoaster. Just when we think we have those blood sugars all leveled out, there are days that her blood sugars just are not in check. As a parent, you just want to fix it, but there are times when you are truly not in control. We have all had to learn to take a deep breath and do what we think is best. We have found that keeping her on a pretty tight schedule with meals, snacks, and activity helps with this.
I am asking for your support again this year. Please donate to my personal fundraising efforts. By doing so, you can help me make a difference for millions of people living with type 1 diabetes, including Payton.
As the leader of the type 1 diabetes community, JDRF unifies global efforts to cure, treat and prevent T1D. JDRF will not rest until T1D is fully conquered. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible?
Thank you for your support! God Bless you and yours.
