Dear HIES walk teammates,
Welcome to the HIES Walk to Cure Diabetes team! This year’s walk will take place October 19, 2013. I am honored to be your team captain this year and accept the challenge to raise money for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. For the past 5 years, we have raised more money than any other school in the nation! Let’s continue to be #1 this year!
There are currently 10 diabetic students who attend Holy Innocents’; however, the family tree of T1Ds at HIES is almost 30 including faculty and staff. T1D, or Type-1 Diabetes, is a lifelong autoimmune disease that causes the pancreas to stop producing insulin and glycogen. People with diabetes have to test their blood sugar by pricking their fingers 6 or more times a day. They must also carefully balance insulin doses with eating and exercise throughout the day and night.
I was diagnosed at the age of 9 and know what it’s like living with this disease on a daily basis. It is difficult, life threatening and, for me, may never go away. However, JDRF walks such as this one unifies the global effort to CURE, TREAT, and PREVENT T1D. Funds that were raised for research helped develop a better, more accurate pump that I wear when I run. They aided in the development of a continuous glucose monitor which contributed to lowering my A1C dramatically. Those funds made a huge difference in my life.
Your support makes a difference to my life and to all others living with T1D. Please help us reach our goal. Donating is quick, easy, and secure. However, if you prefer, you can mail your contribution to the address below. Make your gift payable to JDRF and please put my name in the memo field.
