Join me in the fight to cure, better treat and prevent type 1 diabetes!

Happy New Year Everyone! I hope everyone enjoyed time with family and friends during Christmas. Well, it’s that time of year again, The Walk to Cure Diabetes. This year it is February 15th at the Crossroads Mall in Waterloo.

As always, we will be taking part in this year’s walk to raise money to improve the lives of all people affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D). As most of you know I just celebrated my 26th year of living with diabetes. Most ask why do you celebrate? Because I haven't let my diabetes control me and I know God gave me this disease because I am strong and can help others living with diabetes.

At the age of 8 my whole life changed and the countless shots and blood sugar testings began. An utter nightmare for my parents to constantly worry about their child. Each day I poke my fingers or toes at least 10 times a day and change my insulin pump site every 3 days. It's been an emotional roller coaster ride but then I put things into perspective and realize that I could be living with a much worse disease. I've stayed strong because of everyone's countless prayers and support through the years.

Last year our team, Haht to Trot, raised $3,100 to go towards finding a cure for diabetes!  We want to thank everyone who supported us last year in the walk. For those who were unable to donate, we know your prayers and thoughts were with us during that time. This year marks our 24th year of raising money for diabetes research. It's because of your donations, researchers are making diabetes more attainable to live with until they find a cure.

Did you know??

*Diabetes can cause kidney disease, blindness, nerve damage, high blood pressure and skin complications.

*More than 3 million people in the US live with type 1 diabetes.

*Each year, more than 15,000 children and 15,000 adults, approximately 80 people per day, are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in the US.

*JDRF provided more than $110 million for type 1 diabetes research in 2012, and currently has research in 17 countries, totaling $530 million.

To keep the research going so that they will find a cure for people with diabetes, we need your support. Our goal this year is $3,000 and will need to be donated by February 12th.  However, if you are unable to donate, we know your prayers and thoughts are always with us and we appreciate it all!

Thanks in advance, we appreciate everything that you have done for us and we cannot thank you enough!!
