Join me in the fight to create a world without type 1 diabetes!
Welcome to my JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes personal fundraising page!
I'm joining this year's Walk to raise funds to improve the life of my son Chris and the lives of millions of other people with type 1 diabetes (T1D). The money I raise will help JDRF advance its strategic research plan to end T1D. Every dollar I help raise gets us closer to finding a cure for Chris.
T1D is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, which the body needs to get energy from food. Managing the disease requires constant carbohydrate counting, blood-glucose testing, and lifelong dependence on insulin. With T1D there are no days off, and there is no cure.
My son Chris was diagnosed with T1D on September 5th 2001, he was 10 years old. We had been noticing a steady decline in his energy level, weight loss, thirsty all the time and constant urination. We had no idea that these were the signs of diabetes. We took him to the doctor that morning and I took the call from the doctor after work that night. He told us we needed to get Christopher to the hospital immediately. We spent the next 3 days in the hospital struggling to get his blood sugar numbers under control. We went through a crash course on diabetic management. It was a life changing event for Chris and our entire family.
Chris is now 24 years old, a graduate of Kennedy High School, a graduate of Kirkwood Community College (Auto Collision Repair Technician), lives on his own and runs the body shop for Bob Stephens Motors in Manchester, Iowa. He is doing a great job managing his diabetes. He checks his blood sugar a minimum of 4 times a day and gives himself insulin injections 4 times a day. That's over 20,000 finger pokes and 20,000 insulin injections. I thank god every day that we have such a strong son who can handle this disease as well as he does.
Please help me find a cure for our son Chris and donate to my Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraising efforts today. Your gift of $5, $10, $15 or $20 will make a difference for millions of people affected by this devastating, life-threatening disease.
