Welcome to Sheila Fetters's Personal Page

On Saturday, February 25 2012, many of our family, friends and co-workers will be walking in the Walk to Cure Diabetes.  As you may know, we have a very personal connection with this disease that affects millions of children and adults. Our twelve year old daughter, Amanda was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of four.  As a result, besides closely monitoring her diet and counting the carbohydrates in everything she eats, Amanda must test her blood sugar levels six to ten times a day and takes insulin via an insulin pump that is attached to her 24 hours, 7 days a week.  This will continue every day for the rest of her life unless a cure is found.

As you can imagine, this has forever changed all of our lives.  In our attempt to encourage and support Amanda and continue to educate those we know about diabetes, we have formed team AMANDA'S PRIDE  in order to do two things; 1) raise money to support the research required to find a cure, and 2) to provide Amanda with support and let her know that she is not alone in her fight against diabetes.  Last year, we sold JDRF sneakers at my office, as well as at Amanda's school to raise money for the Walk. With the corporate and personal donations, Amanda's Pride raised over $3000.  The Walk, as well as the Diabetes Camp she attends every summer, is a place where Amanda does not feel alone with her disease.  She is also reassured that she can do and be anything, in spite of her diabetes.

Our goal this year is to attempt to raise $5000 for diabetes research.  We will continue with the sneaker sales and more.  Amanda, herself has taken an active role by making bracelets and key chains and organized two bake sales to personally raise money to help find a cure.  TO date, she alone has raised over $700!  Here's how you can help!

  1. Come walk in support of Amanda on February 25th at Westdale Mall in Cedar Rapids and be an active participant of  team Amanda's Pride.  All that we request is that you register (www.jdrf.org), collect pledges and join us for a day of fun at the Walk.
  2. Make a tax-deductible contribution in support of Team Amanda Fetters (checks made payable to JDRF) and mail to my business address: 2600 Edgewood Road SW Suite 376, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52404.  You can also make an online donation by visiting www.jdrf.org, and donate to Amanda Fetters, and apply it to your credit card.  Any amount is welcome.

JDRF is the only major diabetes organization focused exclusively on research, funding science globally in four therapeutic areas: immune therapies, beta cell therapies, glucose control and complication therapies. Some of the exciting progresses include 1) the devlopment of Smart Insulin, a once-a-day insulin dose that "knows" how much insulin to deliver at each meal base on carb intake, and 2)research on alpha cells in the pancreas to take on the role of insulin production that was the role of the now destroyed beta cells.  The later is truly a Cure for type 1 diabetes!  Please know that more than 80 percent of JDRF?s expenditures directly support research and research-related education.

We greatly appreciate your consideration and support of this most worthy cause.  We look forward to having as many people as possible join us on February 25th.  Even if you can't join us on the Walk, we appreciate any and all donations made to Team Amanda's Pride.  Please have all pledges and donations to Sheila by February 20, so we can have it ready to turn in prior to the Walk.  Again, thank you from all of us for your generous support.

Our deepest gratitude,

The Fetters Family

Mike, Sheila, James, Amanda, and Nicholas
