My family and I are walking in the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes on Saturday, May 10, 2014 outside at NewBo Market in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. As you may know, we have a personal connection with this disease that affects millions of children and adults. On Feburary 21, 2011 our daughter, Delaney, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at 7 years old. Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. It can strike at any age and lasts a lifetime.
As you can imagine, this has forever changed all of our lives. Besides closely monitoring Delaney's diet, she must also test her blood sugar levels 6-10 times a day and take insulin through an insulin pump. This equates to approximately over 2,500 finger sticks and 122 site changes each year. This will continue every year for the rest of her life unless a cure is found.
In our attempt to encourage and support Delaney, while educating those we know, we have formed Team D in order to do two things: 1) raise money to support the research required to find a cure, and 2) to provide Delaney with support and let her know that she is not alone in her fight against diabetes. The walk is a place where Delaney does not feel alone with her disease. It has also taught her she can do anything she sets her mind to.
To accomplish our goal of trying to form a walk team to show our support for Delaney, we are recruiting anyone who would like to join us and our team and raise money in support of Delaney and the overall Walk to Cure Diabetes.
YOU CAN HELP!
1. Make a donation in support of Team D (cash or checks made out to JDRF, sent to me). You can also make an online donation by visiting www.jdrf.org.
2. Come walk in support of Delaney on May 10 and be a participant of Team D. All we request of that you register (www.jdrf.org), collect money from folks you know, including yourself, and then join us for a fun day at the Walk.
We greatly appreciate your consideration and support of this most worthy cause. We look forward to having as many people as possible join us on May 10. Even if you can't join us on the walk, we appreciate any and all donations made to support Team D as part of our overall fundraising.
If you have any questions or need any additional information, please don't hestitate to call or email us. Again, thank you from all of us for your generous support of Delaney.
