I am walking with TEAM ANNIKA for the second year. Annika is a second grader at our school. She was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes on 12/12/11. She returned to school several days later and she and I became great friends while I had some very fast on the job training on how to care for a diabetic first grader. Fortunately there were resources like JDRF to help me get started.
While she and I both cried through our first days of pokes and shots we eventually worked our way into a routine that worked for us. Annika's parents helped us learn as we went as many changes needed to be made, it seemed like we were constantly troubleshooting...and then there were days that were thrown off by trying to figure out the number of carbs in a CUPCAKE. Now Annika has an insulin pump and we can eliminate the dreaded shots. We still do our pokes and are lucky to have the best carb counter ever...Nancy.
I could tell you so much more about Annika. And about her parents Roy and Kelly (Lehrman) Stillwagon. But this message really serves one purpose and that is to raise money for JDRF so that they can continue to work towards finding a cure or a better treatment ...things that I think are possible in Annika's lifetime. So if you can please support TEAM ANNIKA. There are links to get to Annika's page if you'd rather give towards her total.
For those you that know us...we walked with TEAM ANNIKA nine months after Sam's accident...we were very excited that we could do it then...and are happy to be doing it again.
Thank you for support! Mindy
