I am inspired by Gabby’s strength and courage on a daily basis. Having Type 1 Diabetes, meaning her body is insulin dependent, produces many challenges for Gabby. She pokes her finger to test her blood sugars 4-6 times a day and has to change her insulin pump site once every 3 days. On March 2nd, 2008, Gabby’s diagnosis date, our daily life changed but with your help we can change her future.
Gabby started wearing an insulin pump in March 2011 which meant few injections and better blood sugar control. Insulin is NOT a cure for her but it is her life support and these tools are making life a little bit easier. The best thing about the pump is that it helps make life more normal for Gabby. I just want her to be able to be a normal kid! She has had many low blood sugar episodes that have landed us in the hospital but since the pump we haven’t had near as many as before. It is a constant balancing act. Gabby’s insulin pump is an example of how our fundraising dollars are put to work at JDRF, who is a major funding contributor to Type 1 Diabetes research for the Cure, Treatment and Prevention.
We have had to change a lot of things including how we eat. We have to count each gram of carbohydrate that Gabby eats each and every day. Diabetes never takes a day off and neither do we.
I am writing again to ask for your help. While we can’t take away Gabby’s diabetes, we can do everything to help find a cure! We are planning to walk in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Walk to Cure Diabetes on May 10th for our 6th year. Our team is called Gabby’s Angels. This is our way to make a difference for Gabby and all others that struggle with this disease and to work toward finding a cure for juvenile diabetes. We are asking for donations to help fund important research. If you can help us, please enclose a check written to JDRF – any amount will help! Yours may be the donation that finally finds a cure. You can also donate online by going to www.walk.jdrf.org . Click “donate” and search for Gabbys name or her team is Gabby’s Angels. We will also be selling shirts to raise money. The shirts are $20 and will be on sale till April 9th. Please let me know if you would like to see a picture of them. Also please let me know ASAP if interested in one and what size/sizes. Let me know if you want to walk with us – we would love to have you join us for a morning of fun! You can contact me at 319-202-5284 or firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any question.
