Dear Family and Friends,
Words truly cannot express how truly blessed we are for the family and friends we have and for the support that everyone has shown to us.
As many of you are aware, our youngest daughter, Taylor, was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes on August 30th, 2011, at the age of 5 years old. She became very ill and had to be hospitalized to get her symptoms under control, and so began a new journey for all of us with her diagnosis.
For those that are not familiar with Type I Diabetes, it is an autoimmune disease in which the pancreas stops producing insulin. There is no discrimination on age or gender, and it lasts a lifetime. As a result of this, those with Type I Diabetes must monitor their diets closely as well as their blood sugar levels to assure they remain in a safe range. Those with Type I Diabetes must also take insulin via an insulin pump or through shots several times a day as well to regulate their blood sugar as their pancreas can no longer do this. Taylor endures all of this with little to no complaint and has truly become our Super girl and hero through all of this.
Insulin however is not a CURE for Type I Diabetes, it is merely a life support for those diagnosed with this. When Taylor was initially diagnosed, we were also blessed to have the support from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), an organization that supports those diagnosed with Type I Diabetes, also known sometimes as Juvenile Diabetes. They were a tremendous support to us in the first days of Taylor’s diagnosis. JDRF is very focused on finding better, more advanced treatments and ultimately a cure for Type I Diabetes and is very active in this mission.
On May 10th, 2014, our family will be walking for our third year, in the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes. We want to encourage and support Taylor, while educating those we know, about Type I Diabetes, and how we can all be part of the movement for this and the research being done. We have formed a team for Taylor, Team Super Taylor, in order to do two things: 1) Provide Taylor with support and let her know that she is not alone in this fight against Type I Diabetes, and that she can still do anything she wants, and 2) to raise money to support the research to find better treatments and a cure.
To accomplish our goal of forming a very large team to show our support for Taylor, we are asking you to join our fight against Type I Diabetes by walking with us on walk day, or by graciously donating to Team Super Taylor. We so appreciate all of you and look forward to seeing you on the 10thth!
