Each year I write a letter talking of my experiences living with diabetes. I try to mix it up and write something a little bit different. New information, new facts, new jokes. But this year I want to write a few thank you notes.
This first one is actually a blog post from Diabetes Day 9 (crazy how time has flown, this November I celebrated D-Day 10!).
Dear Dr. Banting,
I would like to rain my thanks upon you. Despite being born in Canada, you overcame the odds (like Celine Dion and Justin Bieber) to show the world your greatness. And by greatness, I mean that you gave the world one of the greatest discoveries of all time. I cannot help but be humbled by your many accomplishments. Without you, I truly wouldn?t be here today. And that?s no lie.
So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you, Dr. Banting, for taking time away from kicking booty in war and playing hockey to discover insulin. You are a great man. If you were here, I would kiss you right on the mouth. And then give myself a shot. Because I can only imagine how sweet that would be.
Happy Diabetes Day to you from a most gracious admirer of your work,
Becca, the nine-year diabetic
P.S. Since I imagine he?s eating donuts with you up there, please give Dr. Best my, well, best. I'm sure he's just as swell of a guy.
My next thank you goes to my first endocrinologist.
Dear Dr. Cook,
Thank you for helping to guide me as I started managing this disease. As an endocrinologist I can only imagine the difficulty of telling children that their lives will never be the same again. You held my hand when I needed it but gave me the tools to stand on my own.
I appreciate you helping to keep my life as normal as possible (and still full of Harry Potter). You are an amazing woman and will always have a special place in my heart. And pancreas.
Love,
Your favorite patient whom your nurses continued to measure each visit despite never growing one centimeter in six years
P.S. Also, thank you for taking care of my sister. I like her so it makes me like you even more.
This next one is for all the lovely people in my life.
Dear family and friends,
I can hardly put into words all of my appreciation and love that I feel towards all of you. Your unending support through the laughter and the tears, the pain and the orange juice mean more to mean than you could imagine. This is a manageable disease. But only because of the amazing support system that I have. It is hard to express my gratitude when each year (and sometimes each day) I am overwhelmed with support.
So this is my digital hug to every one of you. You can get a real one (and probably a plate of warm cookies) if you come visit me.
Love,
Your favorite punny diabetic
And, finally, a thank you note to the people who have never had to endure my ill-timed jokes or incessant chatter about ridiculous things.
Dear People Who Donate Money that I Don't Know,
You warm my heart. Each time I get an email and see the thermometer on my fundraising page rise, I am filled with joy. It is especially touching that you do not know me personally but still choose to support my cause. I am passionate about raising money for obvious and, perhaps, selfish reasons. But not you. You donate out of the goodness of your heart. I am eternally greatful.
Thank you times infinity,
Becca
So those are my thank you notes for now. I have a million more that I should write. So thank you for taking the time to read this and to donate. Please pass this along to as many people as you know. I have set a very lofty goal this year, but I am determined to meet it. So check back often to see how I'm doing. Plus you can also enjoy the sound effects of the thermometer rising and eventually exploding beyond the top. It's really one of my favorite things. Also cupcakes.
