Who's your #1?

This year, we will be taking part in JDRF's Walk to Cure Diabetes, along with one-half million other walkers across the country, as we try to reach our goal of raising $89 million for research to prevent, treat and ultimately cure Type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes or T1D is an autoimmune disease that occurs when the body's immune system mistakingly attacks the insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas.  A T1D diagnosis is devastating and affects millions of people, a large and growing percentage of them children.  Our daughter Jamie is one of those kids, diagnosed shortly after her 4th birthday, in January 2010.  Our lives have changed considerably since her diagnosis.  Our daily routine now includes 5-8 blood sugar checks, 4-5 shots of insulin, and constant worry about her blood sugar levels being either too high or too low.  Even so, it's much easier to control Jamie's blood sugars now than it was for kids diagnosed 20 - 15 - even 10 years ago.

Much of this progress in managing T1D is due to the efforts of JDRF.  JDRF funds more T1D research than any other charity worldwide and it's making progress along many promising paths toward better treatments for T1D.  Supporting the efforts of JDRF is our best hope for the ultimate treatment: a cure for T1D.
