If . . .
If you have ever avoided going to the grocery store after church because that is when they give out all the samples, then you know.
If you have ever plunged a piercing needle in your terrified child?s thigh then you know.
If you have ever cried yourself to sleep, knowing your child?s life would never again be the same, then you know.
If you have ever walked down the aisles of Target with tear filled eyes looking for one small treat for your child for Valentine?s Day, and found nothing she could have, then you know.
If you set your alarm to wake you in the middle of the night every night so you can test your child?s blood sugars then you know.
If you carry medicine with you at all times, in case your child passes out from low blood sugar, then you know.
If you have ever smiled when you heard your daughter get out of bed because then you know she made it through another night, then you know.
If you have ever dreamed of your daughter?s wedding day, and known that without a cure she will wear a garter on one leg and a insulin pump on the other, then you know.
If you have ever had to explain to your child what Diabetes is then you know.
Hello! This year, I'll be taking part in my 9th Walk to Cure Diabetes, along with about 8,000 of my closest friends! My walk team is called Amber's Awesome Angels, my parents say that's because of all the Angels who watch out for me. I think it's because I'm such an angel!
Type 1, or juvenile diabetes, is a devastating disease that affects millions of people, a large and growing percentage of them children like me. I was diagnosed 6 years ago, on February 15th, 2005, and life hasn't been the same since. Life with diabetes has been a roller coaster. I have good days, like when I got to go to Children's Congress in Washington DC in 2009, or all the great friends I've met at Time to Talk support group meetings and at Camp Hertko Hollow. But I have bad days, like when my blood sugar scores are so high that I get physically sick and have to leave school.
There is some good news, though. JDRF is our best hope for finding a cure. It funds more type 1 diabetes research than any other charity worldwide and it's making progress along many promising paths toward better treatments and a cure.
Now, more than ever, you can make a crucial difference. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible? Will you join my team and be one of my angels? Together, we can make the cure a reality!
