Owen's Story
Our son Owen Collins is 9 years old and has had Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes since he was 2. That means he needs insulin 24/7. He has to check his blood sugar and count how many carbohydrates he will eat and enter it in the pump each time he eats.
We are so thankful for technology. He is now able to use an insulin pump, instead of having a minimum of 4 shots a day or (1,460 yr). Now we only change his pump set (plastic tubing that goes under his skin that delivers the insulin) every 2 days (183 yr). Wow what an improvement. Unfortunately he does have to prick his finger at least 10-12 times per day (3,650 yr). A normal blood sugar is between 70-120, he has had blood sugars anywhere from 29 to over 600. We are doing well if we keep his blood sugar between 100-200, his A1C (average blood sugar for 3 months) has been between 7.2-8.3 which is about an average 180 blood sugar. That is good for his age. The older he gets the better it is. He handles it all well, but it would be AWESOME if they found a cure. He could go to a friends house may be even for a sleep over without everyone having to worry. Then he could just eat and not have to worry about any of that, or the complications later in life.
