Help Me, Help Zain and all the Other Kids and Famillies that LIVE with Type One Diabetes!!
Welcome to my personal JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraising page!† I'll be taking part in this year?s Walk to raise funds to improve the lives of all people affected by Type 1 Diabetes.
Zain, was born a beautiful healthy baby girl. When her family came back to the states from Japan, they did their rounds visiting family. I couldn't wait to meet my niece, I waited up until 3am for them. I opened the door and there she was, this adorable little girl with bright big blue eyes. I remember reaching for her, and she reached back. Carissa said I was the first person she reached for out of all the new people she's met. Her family went back up to Iowa. There she started to get sick. My sister was in and out of the ER with her. One night, I remember Carissa telling me that her blood sugar was in the 900!! That was night they knew it was Diabetes. I was still in culinary school at the time and everything I did from there out was learn how to cook for someone with type one. What kinds of food are better for them and what can help, if anything? Carissa and the kids later moved back down to Orlando. Carissa found a job, and being a new mother I stayed home with the kids. I learned how to take care of Zain. How to check her blood sugars. How to count and caulate carbs. How to give shots. How to do sites. How to work the pump. I've been helping my sister care for Zain ever since. She has her good days and her bad days. Sometimes, she'll make me cry when she fights getting a shot or her site on. Don't get me wrong, Zain is a trooper!! She is a tough cookie!! But all the shots and site changes make her skin get raw and I can only imagine how much it hurts her. I love her so much and it hurts me to see her have to deal with this. And it's something she is going to have her whole life.
