Join me in the fight to create a world without type 1 diabetes!
April 8, 2013 was the worst day of my life. On this day our wonderful eleven year old grandson, Caden Mager, was diagnosed with Type 1 (Juvenile) diabetes. Until that day, I really didn't know what T1D was all about--we had no family members with the disease and it was really not any where on our horizon.
T1D is an autoimmune system disease that is usually diagnosed in pre-adolescent children. There is no pill, treatment or diet that can cure this disease and there is never a remission or time off. It is a 24/7 disease that demands constant monitoring of blood glucose levels, counting of every carbohydrate ingested (and how many 11 year olds even know what a carb is?), and injecting insulin to keep the glucose at sustainable levels. It is a huge burden for a child and his parents.
As a grandparent, I want to fix Caden's problem. But there is no fix. So I pray every night for a cure and have faith that God will guide the researchers to that cure. In the meantime, funding is crucial to the research. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is devoted to finding the cure for diabetes. All funding for JDRF is raised by volunteer donations and over 90% of these donations go to research. Although the cure is still on the horizon, the research so far has resulted in many break throughs that make the lives of diabetics a little easier and safer. So even though I can not fix this, I can try to help by raising funds that will finance more research. I hope you will give your support by making a donation so one day Caden can say "I used to be diabetic."
Your donation will count towards the team's fundraising total. In addition, please give credit to the person that asked for your support to recognize them for their efforts in creating a world without type 1 diabetes (T1D).
