Ashlynn Wilkins

    GRADE 5

It was one night that my mom had given me a huge glass of water. It was a dark and cold night. I was going to bed when my mom and dad had kissed me goodnight when later I woke up with my heart pounding, shaky and thirsty. It felt like I took one drink and it was all gone. I went to the fridge and my mom woke up and was anxious and curious what I was doing.

The next morning I went to school and came home tired, shaky and nauseated. My mom said that she was taking me to the doctor. I could just imagine that day not wanting to go, but my mom took me anyway. I was sitting in the office when Dr. Hanks came in. He said I have to go to the hospital. My mom looked at me and I looked at her and we both stared at each other worried. I had these big eyes with tears coming down my face. I started to hug my mom. This time I was crying and my mom told me I would be okay.

Then I am sitting in the hospital bed later that night thinking 'mom's right, I am going to be fine.' Just then the nurse came in and said they needed an IV and I flipped out. I didn't know what it meant, but IV sounded bad. The nurse put my IV in and it hurt really bad. I was screaming at the top of my lungs. Jake, my brother, knew I was hurt so he started to cry.

The next morning my dad came into the room and asked how I was doing and I told him I was fine. He gave me a little angel bear that was blue and I do like blue. It wasn't just a boy color. He also brought me a cat that I named Thumper. He was a fat cat. He was fake too. Then the nurse came in and I was scared. The nurse had a smile on her face and told my family that I could go home. I was so happy. I never thought that I would get out of the hospital. It was scary. I could hear kids crying.

I finally got to go home and return to school and see my friends. I was happy. Really, really happy. My classmates and teacher signed a card to welcome me back to school. Diabetes is hard, but everybody has something and mine is diabetes. I'm just a normal girl. All I do different is give myself shots and poke my finger. I could have never done it without my amazing family and friends and I'm proud of that.
