Welcome to my personal JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraising page!
I'll be taking part in this year's Walk to raise funds for the millions of people living with and affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D). The money I raise will help JDRF fund critical research to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people's lives until no one has to fear developing the disease.
Type 1 diabetes is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin - a hormone essential to the ability to get energy from food. It strikes both children and adults suddenly and changes life as they know it forever. It cannot be prevented and there is no cure.
It struck our family on October 27th, 2009, when then 6 year old Tommy was diagnosed with it. He had not been feeling well the past couple of weeks, and we noticed that he was drinking huge amounts of water and, as you can expect, peeing constantly. He was also extremely hungry all the time. Our first thought was growth spurt. He's a growing boy, of course he is hungry! Thirsty, though? Hmm... When the drinking didn't ease, we brought him to our pediatrician. After a very quick urine check we were sent straight to the emergency room. Imagine our panic and confusion. What? Emergency room? But he's fine, he's just thirsty!
This is how our story began. Tommy's blood sugar at diagnosis was 486 (normal is around 100...). Our boy, at the time deathly afraid of needles, was looking at a lifetime of needles! After 3 extremely long days at the hospital, where Tommy was given life-saving insulin, and we were given instructions on how to keep our son safe, we were finally allowed to go home. Since then, every day is a learning experience for all of us. Diabetes never sleeps, never rests, never gives you a break.
JDRF is the largest nongovernmental funder of T1D research and the only global organization with a strategic research plan to fight T1D. This science is complex and costly, and every dollar JDRF is able to direct toward research comes from donors like you.
Please support me and donate to my Walk fundraising campaign. Your gift will make a difference for millions of people affected by this devastating, life-threatening disease. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible today?
Thank you for your support! We really appreciate your donation! If you would like and are able to, we would love to have you walk with us as well! The walk is a lot of fun for the whole family!
Take care, and thank you again from the bottom of our hearts for supporting a world free from Type 1 Diabetes!
