Welcome to our JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes team page!
A note from Olivia,
In early March I began to feel ill and became so weak that I could not stay awake. My parents took me to the doctor and they thought I had some kind of bacterial infection and gave me a shot. (Ouch!!!) This seemed to have worked for a few days and I eventually felt good enough to go back to school after missing almost a week already. I was so excited to see all my friends that I was missing! On the day I was to return to school I became very sick again and had to go back to the emergency room. They were about to give me a drink and send me back home, but my mom and Dr. Germino were persistent and asked for more tests. Thank God for Dr. Germino and my mom because through this testing they found abnormal glucose levels in my blood and determined that I had Diabetes. This was all confusing because I had never heard of diabetes before. Now I have to wear a bracelet every day and get shots FOUR TIMES A DAY. If that wasn't enough I have to poke my finger all the time to check my blood sugar levels. Dr. Kawadry (my endocrinologist) says she never saw a five year old that wants to poke her own finger and says I'm amazing. The day I was diagnosed is March 15 2013. As of now there is not a cure for diabetes and I will live with this for the rest of my life. Please help find a cure by donating whatever you can to my walk. Your participation is greatly needed and greatly appreciated.
We're taking steps to help JDRF progressively remove the impact of type 1 diabetes (T1D) from people's lives until no one has to fear developing this disease. By joining our Walk to Cure Diabetes team and making a donation to JDRF, you'll raise money to help fund critical T1D research and create a world without T1D.
Type 1 diabetes is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin. It strikes both children and adults suddenly and changes life as they know it forever. It cannot be prevented and there is no cure.
JDRF is the only global organization with a strategic research plan to fight T1D. Every dollar JDRF is able to direct toward research comes from donors like you.
The challenge we've set ourselves - to raise money for JDRF and to walk - is modest compared to the daily challenges of life with T1D, which involves a 24/7, unrelenting cycle of blood sugar testing and insulin injections to manage the disease.
Will you accept the challenge to make a difference by walking with us? Just click on the "Join this Team" button, make a donation, and start fundraising.
Thank you for your support, and we'll see you on Walk day!
