I am having a milestone birthday in July - 60. That is 60 years of pretty good health and a good life. I eat and drink what I want and don't think about the number of carbs in a meal or how much insulin I need to give myself to process my food intake. But my son Steve does, as does my brother-in-law Jay because they have type 1 diabetes and are dependent on giving themselves insulin to live. And my father passed at the young age of 60, from complications from type 1 diabetes.
I watch my son test his blood sugar before and after meals...and while I sip my wine, he activates his pump to dispense insulin. The gift I want for my 60th birthday is a cure for him and for everyone living with type 1 diabetes.
Last year, our family formed the team Marching for Mickey - in honor of my father-in-law who had type 2 diabetes and who walked for years with my mother-in-law Serna, in the Chicago JDRF Walk. We will all be raising money and walking in this year's event.
If you'd like to honor my birthday, please consider a personal or group donation of $60 or more to JDFR and you will have made my milestone event an even more significant day.
