Hi to all my family and friends,
I am so excited to bring Team Becka Boo to the 2013 Ron Santo Walk to Cure Diabetes!
I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) when I ws 7 years old (25 years ago). Growing up with diabetes was hard, grammar school was no picnic and my teenage years were just as hard if not harder. I knew what I was supposed to do and what I should do, but that never stopped me from doing everything that I shouldn't have been doing, from not doing my blood, to not eating right, and above all else just not caring. I wanted to have fun with my friends and NOT be different.
Well all of this caught up to me back in 2005 when I was diagnosed with Diabetic Retinopathy. After many, many laser treatments and 5 eye surgeries (3 on my left eye and 2 on my right) I am left legally blind in my left eye and have low vision in my right. I also experienced a scare with my kidneys a couple months ago. I always thought "never me" when it came to the complications of disbetes, if I could turn back time I would like to think that I could and would change a lot of things especially and most importantly my acceptance and willingness to learn and be responsible for my own health.
I am 32 years old now and finally doing great! My A1C has been uder 6.5 for the past year and a half. My eyes are stable, not getting any worse, if anything maybe a little better and my kidneys are also stable now, all this because my diabetes is finally under control.
Someday I hope there will be a cure for T1D so that children don't have to go through life with this disease. Never give up hope on findong a cure, keep donating to the research, the prevention, and the cure for T1D. Please join our team or donate, any help is greatly appreciated!
