Dear Family and Friends,
We wanted to share the last year of our lives with you.
February 3, 2013 Jaden was accepted as a delegate for Children’s Congress. A huge honor! She was selected as the KY Representative who would go before Congress to share her story, the importance of funding and research. February 3rd was also her 9 year anniversary with type 1 diabetes…..
Last October, through “Trial Net” Deven tested positive for the antibodies that cause type 1. She was accepted into a clinical drug trial study at Vanderbilt University. She underwent a 14-day IV drug to delay or prevent the onset of type 1 diabetes. She was extremely brave and a huge part of research and the cure. She is our hero!
Despite all circumstances, Deven was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes April 5, 2013.
Due to early diagnosis, she can control her diabetes with diet to prolong the start of insulin. We’re doing everything we can to delay the onset. Every day with out insulin is a blessing. Please pray!
JDRF invited Deven to join Jaden at Children’s Congress. We’re very proud of our delegates, their bravery, commitment and positive attitude! This was a very exciting time for them and us.
Caught up in the excitement, it was very humbling for us as we sat on the Capital steps. We were about to speak with our senators. Jaden was preparing to share her story. She began to go through her scrapbook the girls made for each Senator, she hesitated and her eyes filled with tears... She reached the part of Deven’s story….”I can’t do this”…. Her heart broken, she DOESN’T want Deven to endure what she has; 29,000 finger pricks, 19,000 injections, 300 insulin pod changes, long term complications that happen to her body when sugar levels aren’t in control, never having a day off, monitoring food intake, counting carbs, high and low blood sugars, needles, calloused fingers, the fear of not waking up, diabetic comas. Her eyes said it all… Jaden is old enough to understand this disease. She looks fine on the outside, but she knows what it does on the inside.
We went forward, shared their story, our story. Our state legislatures know about diabetes, why research, funding, and supporting the SDP (Special Diabetes Program) is critical. Advancements have made Jaden’s life easier and help keep her healthier. We still need a cure! We need your help!
