Hi! This is Alex. I am 8 years old and was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on July 10, 2010. For the past couple of years, I've been taking insulin shots about 5 times a day and checking my blood sugar by poking my finger with a needle about 6 times a day. Just after my birthday this year I was able to get an insulin pump which means I do not have to get as many shots!
Advancements are being made in the treatment of Type 1, or Juvenile Diabetes, a disease that affects millions of people, many of them from childhood. Even with carefully controlling blood sugar levels, at some point this disease can affect eyesight, kidneys, nerves, and blood flow to extremities. There is some good news, though. The JDRF is our best hope for finding a cure. It funds more Type 1 Diabetes research than any other charity worldwide and it's making progress along many promising paths toward better treatments and finding a cure.
This is where we need your help. My big sis Avery, along with family and friends will be walking with me to help the JDRF find a cure for the millions of people who are affected by this disease. You can help our family in the following ways. One is to join our team, raise money and walk with us on August 24th at Churchill Downs. The second way is to make a tax deductible donation. You can do this by clicking on the "Donate to Alex" link or by check. The third way is to keep all those affected by Diabetes in your prayers.
We thank you for your support and I also want to thank my family and friends for their support over the past few years.
