As many of you know, our little grandson, Gavin was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 15 months. Gavin has just celebrated his 6th birthday, and with the excellent care of his parents, Dan and Michel, continues to do well. In December 2012 he was equipped with an insulin pump. This allows a needle insertion into his skin every three days instead of four or more injections daily that he had to endure prior to the pump. However, he must still have several daily finger pricks to check his blood glucose. By the way, he does most of those finger pricks by himself now!
Diabetes is a dreadful disease with multiple possible complications affecting the heart, eyes, kidneys, just to name a few.
There is no cure for Type 1 diabetes! There is ongoing research, but this research requires funding, and that is why we are writing to you now.
On August 24th at Churchill Downs in Louisville, JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) will be holding its annual "Walk to Cure Diabetes". We invite to you to walk with us on that day, and also, if you are able, to make a donation, no matter how small, to assist researchers in finding a cure.
If you prefer not to donate online, you can write a check. Checks can be made to JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) and mailed to our address at:
