Welcome to TEAM KATIE CAT
Hello! This year, We'll be taking part in JDRF's Walk to Cure Diabetes! We are walking for our daughter, Katie!!.
Katie was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes just before her 3rd birthday. Type 1, or juvenile diabetes, is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks healthy cells in the pancreas that produce insulin! We need insulin to fuel the cells in our body! So basically Katie's pancreas is "asleep" and she is now "insulin dependent". Managing diabetes is constant and takes determination. We check the amount of glucose in Katie's blood up to 12 times a day by finger pricks, and give her insulin via shots 5 times a day (sometimes more). The hardest part is preparing for every day life and what it throws at you. Every birthday party with cake, every snack at school, every ding of the ice cream truck bell, afternoon playdates with friends, even growing and getting taller - all the fun things we take for granted need to be met with preparation for a person with Type 1. Life has changed for us in our efforts to make Katie's as normal as possible. Our bags are filled with snacks just in case she has low blood glucose while we're out and air travel - well that is a whole different ball of wax! And, our alarm goes off at 3:30 am EVERY NIGHT for a blood glucose check, because overnight severe low blood glucose (hypoglycemia) is one of the leading causes of serious short term problems.
Katie has had dieabetes for 3 years and she is a very active little 6 year old. She participates in gymnastics and soccer and she's starting kindergarten in the fall. Katie does NOT let diabetes control her - instead, she embraces the disease and isn't afraid to show people how brave she is. She understands that there is a process before she eats, so she sticks her finger out for a blood glucose check, and sticks her arm out for a shot - then she proceeds as normal. She amazes us every day!
JDRF is our best hope for finding a cure. It funds more type 1 diabetes research than any other charity worldwide and it's making progress along many promising paths toward better treatments and a cure.
Now, more than ever, you can make a crucial difference. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible? Together, we can make the cure a reality!
