Do you remember what you wanted to be when you grew up? Your list could have had one wish or twenty; I'm sure they were all amazing! Alexis (at age 8) has two:
1. To a be a pop star- or in a band with her BFF Julia
2. To not have Diabetes
It's hard to understand what a child or family of a diabetic goes through. Each meal there is a prick test to check her blood sugar, then carbohydrates are counted and all of that is entered into her insulin pump. If you don't have a pump there is some math invovled and you recieve and injection of insulin. For Alexis it adds up to 8-10 finger pricks a day. That includes all the times she doesn't feel quite right so we need to test to make sure she is not low or high. Activity, mood, and weather are factors besides food that can change blood sugars.
If you are interested in trying to see what even part of a day would be like try this: Put a rubber band around your wrist. Each time you have a meal or snack snap the rubber band. Before you go to the gym and after snap the rubber band. Don't forget to before you go to bed! This isn't an exact science but it gives you a snapshot of what it can be like.
We asked Alexis to write a little information for this page but she was very challenged by it. She lives everyday with Diabetes. Alexis gets questioned by teachers, the school nurse, priniple, daycare providers, parents and friends all day long- Do you feel ok? Did you test your sugar? Doesn't that hurt? Most days it doesn't bother her but some days she just has had enough. Mom I don't want Diabetes anymore!
On October 20, our family and friends will be participating in the Western Mass Walk to Cure Diabetes at Six Flags New England so that one day we can say Alexis does not have Diabetes anymore.
Thank you for your support and we would be honored to see you at the Walk on October 20th! Please contact either of us if you have any questions.
