April 8th, 2012 is a day my family and I will always remember. It's the day that "we" became affected as a family with Type 1 Diabetes. On that quiet Easter morning my husband and I noticed some changes that were happening with our 6 year old daughter, Taylor. We noticed the main three symptoms of T1D: weight loss, excessive thirst, and frequent urination. After calling her doc with this concern he instructed us to head to the hospital where our suspicions were confirmed. Taylor had Type 1 Diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin - a hormone essential to the ability to get energy from food. It strikes both children and adults suddenly and changes life as they know it forever. It cannot be prevented and there is no cure.
Tay's Team was formed out of the love of family and friends to help Taylor and our family cope with how to handle this disease. As of right now there isn't a cure but one day I will be able to say that "my daughter HAD T1D" and our team helped contribute to finding the cure!
Last year in a short 6 months Tay's Team raised a whopping $18,689.13!!!! We were the Rookie Team of the Year, one of the Top Ten Teams in Boston, was featured as a Cure Champion for the September issue for the JDRF newsletter, and Taylor and I were interviewed on Boston Fox News representing JDRF. It was an amazing year. Amazing because not only did we have fun raising money for JDRF but we raised awareness to our whole community about Type 1 Diabetes.
Our family, along with many of our friends, will be taking part in this year's Walk to raise funds for the millions of people like Taylor living with and affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D). The money we raise will help JDRF fund critical research to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people's lives until no one has to fear developing the disease.
JDRF is the largest nongovernmental funder of T1D research and the only global organization with a strategic research plan to fight T1D. This science is complex and costly, and every dollar JDRF is able to direct toward research comes from donors like you.
Our goal, as a team, is to exceed our last year's $18,689 to $20,000. Please consider helping this AWESOME organization, not just for Taylor but the millions of children that struggle daily with this life changing disease.
Thank you for your support and THANK YOU FOR HELPING FIND A CURE FOR TAYLOR!
P.S. If you would like to join Tay's Team we would love to have you walk with us!!!! It was such an eye opening, emotional day for all of us. Something that you or your children will never forget. Please join us!
