Thank you to all that supported our team last year. This will be our second year participating in this event supporting this worthy cause and we're excited to continue with our efforts to help fund the research to cure Type 1 Diabetes!
Our son, Owen, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes 3 days after his 5th birthday. He has experienced and overcome a broad spectrum of emotions ranging from anger and grief to acceptance and management. For such a young child, he continues to amaze us with his bravery, wit and strength. Our entire family has traveled on this roller coaster alongside Owen and we have all learned a great deal in what it means to live with Type 1 Diabetes. We are very fortunate to have wonderful and supportive family and friends. In addition, Owen's medical team is top-notch and we are grateful for the care and compassion they have for him and our family.
With all that we have learned and accomplished to provide a healthy life for Owen, we still hope and pray for a cure. Even the most diligent person could never perfect consistently stable blood glucose levels. Growth spurts, colds, hot weather, cold weather, exercise, diet, and then some, all effect blood glucose levels. The worry that we have that elevated levels will cause damage over time is heartbreaking. Just to survive, people with T1D must take multiple injections of insulin daily or continually infuse insulin through a pump. Taking insulin does not cure any type of diabetes, nor does it prevent the possibility of the disease’s devastating effects: kidney failure, blindness, nerve damage, amputation, heart attack, stroke. This is why we participate in this walk, to help fund the research to find a cure.
Thank you for taking the time to read our story and for considering to support this worthy cause.
