Welcome to my personal JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraising page!
I'll be taking part in this year's Walk to raise funds for the millions of people living with and affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D). The money I raise will help JDRF fund critical research to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people's lives until no one has to fear developing the disease.
Type 1 diabetes is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin - a hormone essential to the ability to get energy from food. It strikes both children and adults suddenly and changes life as they know it forever. It cannot be prevented and there is no cure.
We our putting together a team this year for our son, Michael. Michael was diagnosed at age 11 on January 23, 2012. We put this team together not only to support and raise awareness for Michael, but all of the other people affected by Type 1 Diabetes. The more people aware of this disease, the closer we will hopefully be to finding a cure. There is lots of research being done, our wish is for more to be done to get rid of this disease once and for all. Not only for our son, Michael, but for every son, daughter, granddaughter, grandson, niece, nephew, etc. living with it. People don't realize how much of a life altering disease this is. I was one of those people. I thought it meant he would simply (and I use that term loosely) take one shot a day and eat sugar free foods. This is not the case at all. Michael is pricking his finger to test his blood sugar levels approximately 10 times a day, he takes at least 4 shots a day, one with each meal and one before bed. These are the mandatory shots, sometimes it's more, like if it's a holiday and he gets to have an extra "treat". There are days it's as many as 6 shots a day. This is alot for any adult living with this disease, never mind a child. The most important thing to realize about this disease, is there is no day off. It is every day, all day, for the rest of your life. We need a cure!!
JDRF is the largest nongovernmental funder of T1D research and the only global organization with a strategic research plan to fight T1D. This science is complex and costly, and every dollar JDRF is able to direct toward research comes from donors like you.
Please support me and donate to my Walk fundraising campaign. Your gift will make a difference for millions of people affected by this devastating, life-threatening disease. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible today?
Thank you for your support!
