JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes is this Saturday, August 6th at 9:30AM at MSU Auditorium Field (corner of Farm Lane and Auditorium Rd.
Dear Friends and Family,
As you know, I was diagnosed with Type 1 (Juvenile) Diabetes at the age of 9 .... 20 years ago already!
When writing on this topic, everyone tells you to explain what life is like being a diabetic, including insulin shots, blood sugar checks, highs, lows etc. Instead, I want to tell you that I have taken Diabetes head on and have refused to let it hinder my life.
I took the "lemons" handed to me, added sugar and water, bloused (this means I took insulin to cover the carbohydrates) and drank the lemonade! I've become a "DIVAbetic"!
What is a "DIVAbetic"?
The concept of a "Divabetic" was inspired by the late R & B legend, Luther Vandross, and was created and founded by his long time assistant, Max Szadek. The Divabetic attitude encourages every woman affected by diabetes to take on a diva's bold sassy personae and posture to help improve the quality of her life. They believe, if they empower the "DIVA" within us to manage our diabetes properly, we will strive to live life at our best!
This year, I'll be taking part in JDRF's Walk to Cure Diabetes. We have formed a family team called "The Divabetics". The research made possible by JDRF has made so much more possible for me and I no longer feel alone in this fight. If you are a Diva, know a Diva or just want to be part of this amazing organization - please join our team! "DUDE-a-betics" are welcome too!
