Welcome to our personal JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraising page! We'll be taking part in this years Walk to raise funds to improve the lives of all people affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D). If you ask people with T1D, they will tell you it is difficult and life threatening. And they know it never goes away.
Our story with Diabetes started when we went on vacation, February 23rd 2011 to Nubs Nob and on the way Heidi became ill. Mostly throwing up (looking back throwing up all sugar foods / drinks we were giving her.) We thought she had the flu, however after 2 days of not getting better only getting worse losing 7 pounds, so dehydrated that her eyes did not close when she slept. We took her to Northern Michigan Regional Hospital in Petoskey where she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. She was in DKA diabetic ketoacidosis. This a serious condition that can lead to diabetic coma (passing out for a long time) or even death. When your cells don't get the glucose they need for energy, your body begins to burn fat for energy, which produces ketones. Ketones are acids that build up in the blood and appear in the urine when your body doesn't have enough insulin. They are a warning sign that your diabetes is out of control or that you are getting sick. High levels of ketones can poison the body. When levels get too high, you can develop diabetic ketoacidosis, or DKA.
With every $25.00 donated I will make and donate a water bottle bag to Kids walking in the JDRF walk. Heidi, Alyssa and most of their friends already have one. This is the perfect way to keep your drink cold and without having to hold it!
We are asking for your support. Please donate to our personal fundraising efforts.
By doing so, you can help us make a difference for millions of people living with type 1 diabetes.
Did you know that:
As the leader of the type 1 diabetes community, JDRF unifies global efforts to cure, treat and prevent T1D. JDRF will not rest until T1D is fully conquered. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible?
Thank you for your support!
