Welcome to my JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraising page!
My family and I will be taking part in this year's walk to raise funds to improve the lives of all people affected by Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). T1D is an autoimmune disease that strikes both children and adults.
While insulin injections allow a person with Type 1 Diabetes to stay alive, it is not a cure. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, adult blindness, and non-traumatic amputations. It is also the leading cause of nerve damage, stroke, and heart attacks. Approximately 2 1/2 million Americans have Type 1 Diabetes.
Devin, at age 6, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in April of 2011. Since then, our lives have changed...to say the least! He bravely pokes his little fingers 8-10 times per day, in order to check his blood sugar levels. Keeping these numbers within a small target window is vital. He also endures up to 6 shots per day . . . EVERYDAY for the rest of his life. We must carefully balance insulin doses with food and daily activities throughout the day and night. His life depends on it.
