Welcome to my personal JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraising page!
As you may know, I live with type 1 diabetes (T1D). I was diagnosed at age 18. While many people believe that insulin is a cure for diabetes, it is only a way to manage the disease and try to prevent its complications. That's why I am committed to JDRF - the only global organization with a strategic plan to fight T1D. JDRF raises funds for research to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people's lives until it is no longer a threat to anyone. I'm joining the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes to help raise the most money possible for the research that will help me continue to live a healthier and safer life while scientists search for a cure.
One of the advancements from JDRF research is the continuous glucose monitoring system where a device can check my blood sugar every 5 minutes and warn me when your blood sugar is rising or falling fast so I can take proactive action. I was put on this sensor a few years back after I was driving home from the golf outing and I went unconscious. I was driving 55 MPH on E Saginaw HWY and cars were stopped at a light and I didn’t even hit the brakes because I was out. The crash woke me up. Fortunately, I ran into a U-Haul truck and not anything smaller so there were no injuries to anyone else but me – and fortunately I walked away with only a few stitches to the face. Thanks to the sensors I am now wearing, such instances haven’t happened again. I am looking for more such advancements – and even a cure!
