Welcome to our JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes team page!
My husband, Chris, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when he was only four years old. Until this past year, I didn't fully understand the gravity of the disease. He had already had his insulin pump when we met, and other than blood sugar levels making him a little irritable, the disease never really had an great impact on me. That was until this past July...
We were in Jamaica on vacation and I awoke in the middle of the night to find Chris in a diabetic coma with his body going into shock from his organs shutting down. I called for help and the hotel nurse was able to give him glucose through an IV and bring him back to me. While we are very grateful to her, Chris and I give all the glory and praise to God, for He awakened me and gave me the peace to know what to do, and He was with Chris the entire time.
From that point until now, we have had several more close calls regarding Chris' blood sugar. There have been instances where he was conscious, but still needed my help to bring his sugar back up. You see, the more low blood sugars someone experiences, the less able they are to detect the symptoms coming on. It was becoming a daily battle when, once again, I awoke in the middle of the night to find him in a diabetic coma. At this point, we both became determined that we are finished with this disease controlling so much of our lives! Chris did great research and worked with our insurance company and family doctor and he was (praise God!) approved for a Dexcom Continuous Glucose Meter (we call him Dexter).
This wonderful device checks Chris' glucose level every five minutes and alerts us when he goes too low or too high. Dexter has brought us great peace of mind and has opened up opportunities for Chris to live a less restricted life. Additionally, we are both sleeping much better! But we aren't finished yet! We have decided to start this team for the JDRF Walk so that we can raise money toward research to put an end to this life altering disease.
We would love for you to sign up to join our team and walk with us! If you are unable to attend the event, we ask that you still consider donating to our team. JDRF is the only diabetic organization that gives 100% of its proceeds toward research. There have been incredible scientific and technological advances toward finding a cure for diabetes. We believe that, with your help, a cure is possible!
