One of my faovrite songs is Live and Die by the Avett Brothers. The opening line is "All it takes is just one moment and you can say goodbye to how we had it planned". There are times in ours lives when we can pinpoint the exact moment that our lives change in a way we never planned. For us one of those days is July 31, 2007. When we got up that day we were just a regular family going about our lives, by the time we went to bed we were a family with a Type 1 diabetic child. At that time we had no idea what that meant. We were scared, confused, and overwhelmed. Over five years later we know that diabetes is not a death sentence but is definitely a life sentence for Em.
Each day Em pokes her finger 6-8 times to test her blood glucose. She wears an insulin pump that gets her the insulin she needs to keep herself alive. Counting carbs, giving herself insulin and monitoring how she feels is a part of every day for Em. She handles this all with grace and humor. Never once has she said "why me?". I am amazed every day at her courage and toughness!
For the fifth year we will be participating in the JDRF Diabetes Walk. We are trying to raise $1,000 this year. Please consider donating to our team. As they say, every penny helps! No donation is too big or too small! Your donation could be the one that is key to finding the cure to diabetes!
