Hello and welcome to my personal page!
As most of you know I have been a type 1 diabetic for about 18 years. Being a type 1 diabetic doesn't just mean pokes & injections everyday. There is much more to it than that. Stress, a cold, and other illnesses can affect my blood sugars just as badly as forgetting my insulin. Bad blood sugars can cause irritability, mood swings, headaches, and can lead to more serious health conditions.
Throughout my years of being a diabetic I have learned to deal in my own way, much like other diabetics. You find your groove and when you hit a bump, you get back up and go on. I am very blessed to have the family and friends that I do, that care so deeply for me, and understand when I have good days, as well as bad.
I decided 3 years ago to start a team, not just for myself, but for all the friends I've met along the way who also deal with what I deal with on a daily basis. I decided it was time for me to take action for a cause that I personally know very well.
Right after creating my team I was at work (Outback Steakhouse) where I had been talking to an elderly couple about how excited I was to finally make a difference, and the old man says to me, "Why would you waste your time with that?" I was completely speechless, and he continued to say to me, "why do you have so much hope in something that will probably never happen in your lifetime?" I replied to him, "I need to have hope and faith because if I didn't I wouldn't be able to inject myself everyday, and keep myself alive" and that's the truth of it. Even if there is no cure in my lifetime, I would sure hope that someday some little boy or girl would never have to experience all the pain I've had to endure. That is why I became a team captain. And that is why I will continue to work hard and walk to find a cure.
Now is the time to make a difference. :)
Please help me in my journey to find a cure for type 1 diabetes.
