We are participating in the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes!
On December 9, 2011, Kyle was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes -- an auto-immune disease that affects millions of people.† Kyle's pancreas has stopped making insulin needed to break down sugar into energy necessary to live.†
This past year has been a learning experience for all of us. Kyle has learned how to test his blood sugar with finger pricks 6-8 times a day, and we have all learned how to count carbs, give insulin injections, insert an insulin pump "set", and manage the insulin pump that keeps him alive. We have done all of this with the AMAZING love and support from our family and friends!
Kyle has been an amazing inspiration to all of us! This year he has continued to excel at school while enjoying soccer, baseball, flag football and swim team. He definitely has more responsibility than most 2nd graders and yet he never complains. In fact, he was recently recognized by his teachers and had his photograph in the local paper for being an outstanding, responsible student. He dreams of one day owning his own Lego store and more than anything he dreams of a day where he can live without diabetes.†
He is a courageous young man.† We are so proud of his positive outlook and amazing attitude that we can't help but get onboard and help find a cure!†
While insulin does keep people with type 1 diabetes alive, it is NOT a cure. Aside from the daily challenges of living with type 1 diabetes (and there are many!), there are many severe, often fatal, complications caused by the disease when not treated properly.†
For the second year, we are taking part in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Walk to Cure Diabetes along with a half-million other walkers across the country. Our goal is to raise $5,000 as a family toward the national goal of $100 million to help fund research for a cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications.† A cure for type 1 diabetes is within reach and it is exciting to us as parents of a 7 year old to think that it could happen within his lifetime!
Please pledge your support in whatever amount you are able.
Your donation will count towards the team's fundraising total. In addition, please give credit to the person that asked for your support to recognize them for their efforts in creating a world without type 1 diabetes (T1D).
