My reason for walking is simple. I walk for my boy. My 7 year old son, Jacob was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on June 1st, 2012. He handles it like a pro. Doesn't slow him down one bit. But I know it gets to him. He writes about it at school. He writes about how he'd like to have sleepovers and eat whatever he wants. He'd like to live in a world without finger pricks, shots and insulin pumps. He says more than anything, he wants a cure for diabetes.
No child and no parent should have to live like this. Every high and every low is potentially life threatening. And those highs that are so difficult to control are causing damage to his body that are irreversible, meaning one day, he may go blind or he may need a kidney transplant or may need to be on dialysis. He may need to have a limb amputated. I don't ever want him to face any of those long-term complications.
Plain and simple, diabetes sucks and I don't want my son or anyone else to have to live like this. I hate diabetes with ever fiber in my being.
