Hello! and welcome to my (Erin Hughes) personal page.
I have been a type 1 diabetic for about 19 years. My diabetes wasn't hereditary but instead I became really ill and the virus ultimately attacked my pancreas and shut it down. I have been insulin dependent since. I give myself about 5-8 shots a day, and test my blood sugar (or try to) at least 4 times a day.
I try my hardest to do the best I can in school and at work, I try to maintain a healthy lifestyle and do what I can to live a somewhat "normal" life. Some days are a lot better than others. That is why I began my team, the Diabetic Dinos, because I can have a say in my future and the future of other diabetics like myself. I want to say some day that I made a difference, I helped in finding better treatment and possibly a cure.
This past year has been crazy, exciting, overwhelming, but I wouldn't have it any other way. After moving home with my parents (that seems to be the trend nowadays) I reconnected with a friend from High School, Mr. Dan Johns who shortly after stole my heart. On August 16 he took me to the restaurant we went for our first date and popped the question. I said yes. :) I am now a very happy fiance, and soon will be an incredibly happy wife (not to mention a STEP MOM) Little Wesley, and Dan are two of the biggest reasons I get up, get ready for my day and want to take care of myself and make sure I'm as healthy as can be. I now have a family, and that's why Diabetic research is important to me.
This will be my 4th year as team captain to the Dinos. I will continue to lead an amazing team until we find a cure. It has been my dream and goal to make a difference in the world and this is the path the Lord has lead me to. I am forever grateful to my family & friends who support and love me and help me through the good and bad times. I am positive and hopeful that I will live a diabetic-free life some day soon! :)
Please help me and others to finding better treatments and a cure for type 1 diabetes.
