Welcome to the Emery Family personal fundraising page

Dear Family and Friends--

Another year has passed and Type 1 diabetes is still very much a part of our everyday lives with our daughter, Hannah.  She was diagnosed December 3, 2008 age the age of 7.  She is now 12 years old and these past 5 years have flown by, but because this disease is such a big part of everyday life, it seems as though we have been doing this forever.  Five years is kind of a milestone and I hope to celebrate Hannah and her strength on December 3rd in some small way.   It is still only the beginning and we still hold out hope for a cure someday.   Spreading the word on what type 1 diabetes is and what it involves in a child, gathering donations for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) so they can research better treatments for Type 1 are very important to us.  Walking in the Walk to Cure Diabetes at the Mall of America with thousands of others living and dealing with the same things we do is inspiring, and fundraising for this cause makes us feel like we are doing something to move the process forward.  Hannah's insulin pump is her lifeline.  Insulin is not a cure, but it definitely keeps her alive.  We are truly grateful for any and all the advancements in diabetes research. I think we have a handle on what diabetes involves, after 5 years, but diabetes is not a perfect science and we are always making adjustments, and facing the challenges of things not always going how we would like them to go.  Vigilance is imperative, perfection impossible is our motto.

Hannah is doing very well, and she visits her endocrinologist every 3 months.  We make sure we are continuing on the right path with her health, get our questions and issues resolved, and get her blood A1C tested, which tells us her blood sugar average over the past 3 months.  I am happy to say that since she has been on the insulin pump things have been going really well in all areas.  Of course there are always some unexpected bumps in the road, but we deal with them as best we can and move on.

The JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes takes place every year, in cities all over the US, and we will be walking at the Mall of America, in MN on Feb 22, 2014.  This will be our 5th walk in MN, and also we walk in a 5K walk in Neenah, WI in May 2014.  These events are more than just participating in a walk, the money raised goes to support diabetes research, the people we are surrounded by that donate and support our family and JDRF is the best part.  We are once again asking for your support and there are several ways you can do this.  You can go online at www.walk.jdrf.org and register to walk and join us on walk day with our team "Hannah's Hopeful Hearts".  Once registered you have the option to ask your family and friends to support JDRF with donations.  These donations will go under your name and you can manage this all online on the website or just send the checks/ cash collected to the JDRF office, to be applied to team Hannah's Hopeful Hearts.  For every $100 raised you will get a T-shirt on Walk Day.   They also provide morning snacks and entertainment that day as well.  The walk starts at 8am, and takes place before the mall opens, it's a walk at your own pace, it lasts for 1 hour and then there is a post walk celebration at the MOA Rotunda.  It is a very awe inspiring day, with over 20,000 people in attendance, and last year 2 million dollars were raised.

Another way to support JDRF and Hannah's Hopeful Hearts is to simply make a personal donation.  You can do this in any dollar amount, every dollar matters.  Credit cards are accepted online at the website link listed above, by searching either Hannah Emery or Hannah's Hopeful Hearts.  Checks can be mailed /given to us, MADE OUT TO:  JDRF. Our address is PO BOX 294, Dassel, MN 55325 or you can mail them directly to the JDRF office 3001 Metro Dr. Suite 100, Bloomington, MN 55425, just make a note either on the check or as a side note to apply to Hannah Emery-- Team Hannah's Hopeful Hearts. Lastly you are always welcome to come and walk with us, even though fundraising is important for our cause, your support is also important, and we would love to see you on walk day.  Just get in contact with us about walk day details. ssbh.emery4@hotmail.com

Hannah can be anything or do anything she wants, despite diabetes. Diabetes is a part of her, but it doesn't define her. She is doing well in school, loves her friends, and loves dance and volleyball at the moment.   She is also learning how to play the flute and just trying to enjoy life as much as possible without letting diabetes get in the way.

Thank you for your support
