Hello friends & family,

I'm writing to ask for your support for a very special cause that is very close to my heart. My beautiful niece, Maddie, was diagnosed with Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes 6 years ago on this VERY DAY (Feb 6th). I can still vividly remember my sister calling me sobbing at the diagnosis as they were on their way to the diabetes center. I can remember it like it was yesterday. Feb. 6th changed our family forever.

Maddie is strong and feisty; however she still struggles "living" with diabetes - as it makes her different from all her friends. She only cracks on rare occasions, which is understandable as it is a heavy burden for such a little girl to carry. Diabetes also affects the ENTIRE family, as well. The entire family needs to know how to; give shots, prick fingers, change sites, refill pumps, count carbs, watch for highs & (especially) lows, get up in the wee hours every night to test, and to understand the full ramifications when she is in your care. This is not a part-time disease. You are "on call" every minute of every day. I don't know how my sister does it - she is truly an amazing person.

In the 6 years Maddie's changed a lot! But advancements have and will make her life more manageable.  JDFR is researching: better medication, artificial pancreases, better technology, and Smart Insulin just to name a few.

This year, we will be taking part in our families 6th JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes, along with a half-million others nationwide. JDRF raises vital funds that power the global movement to help cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes (T1D).

Afterwards, the MOA opens up the park rides early for the walkers and we make it a special day just for our Maddie.
