Hello! Hockey player, basketball player, football player, Xbox (or anything electronic) fanatic, still a STAR WARS fan, and 3rd grader Eric here!
Four years ago (January 5, 2009), I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (aka Juvenile Diabetes). My life and that of my family changed forever on that day. I'm doing well (I started using an insulin pump in July 2009!) but the road ahead is long and filled with extra challenges that I'll face day by day. Now that I'm active in sports and wanting to do all the things a 3rd grader wants to do, diabetes makes it all a bit harder.
Diabetes is a 24/7 disease - there's no break - no time off. As an individual with Type 1 Diabetes, I have to test my blood glucose levels 8-10 times per day. I also have to count every carbohydrate I eat - not just sugar. Since my body doesn't produce insulin, I have to tell my pump how much insulin to give me whenever I eat - snacks, meals, drinks, and the stuff in between. (Oh the fun of trying to estimate the number of carbs in something - don't get me started!) I also have to keep in mind my activity level as that affects my blood glucose too. I change my pump insertion every 2 - 3 days. Whew! That's a lot of stuff for a busy 8 3/4 year old! (Yes, I still count all those fractions and I don't round down!)
First, I want you to know that I'm very grateful and so lucky. I have good medical care and good friends and through the work of generous folks and talented researchers, there have been great strides made over the past years in the care and treatment of diabetes. However, we still don't have a CURE....and that's where I really need your help. My to-do list is growing and I'd like to cross "Cure for Diabetes" off it!
Thus the second part - I'm going to be participating in my fourth "JDRF's WALK TO CURE DIABETES" at the Mall of America in Bloomington, MN on February 23, 2013.
Below are some ideas on how you can be part of "ERIC'S FORCE":
1. You can make a donation to my team by clicking on the DONATE TO ERIC link above.
2. Join Eric's Force! Walk where you can - your own mall, your treadmill, or your neighborhood! By joining my team as a walker, you can ask your friends to donate and support YOUR efforts....and get some good exercise at the same time! Not only would you be an awesome fundraiser but you'd also be getting the word out about Type 1 Diabetes. You could even get your friends to join our team and get their friends to support them! Think about what all your fantastic FACEBOOK friends could accomplish! Just click on the JOIN MY TEAM link above and let's get this party started!
Now, more than ever, you can make a crucial difference. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible? Together, we can make the cure a reality!
THANK YOU SO SO MUCH and........May "ERIC'S FORCE" be with you!
Your donation will count towards the team's fundraising total. In addition, please give credit to the person that asked for your support to recognize them for their efforts in creating a world without type 1 diabetes (T1D).
