Join me in the fight to cure, better treat and prevent type 1 diabetes!
Welcome to my personal JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraising page! My name is Jacob. I am 8 years old and I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on June 1, 2012. In order to take care of my diabetes, I have to poke my finger to check my blood sugar at least 6 times a day (and night because diabetes never sleeps). I use an insulin pump so I hardly ever have to have a shot but I still get plenty of other pokes. My pod (the device that gives me insulin) is stuck to me for 2-3 days at a time and gives me insulin slowly throughout the day through a small cannula inserted under my skin and extra insulin whenever I eat something. I also wear a device called a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM), which alarms if my blood sugar gets too high or too low (this gives my parents a lot of sanity and has helped save my life many times since I got it). My CGM sensor is also inserted under my skin but I wear it for 2 weeks at a time. I wish I didn't have to have stuff stuck to me 24/7. It is really hard on my skin. I don't like having diabetes, but I'm a tough kid so I do what I have to do.
This year, I'm walking again because I'm hoping someday, there will be a cure for diabetes. I can't wait until the day when I can say I USED to have Type 1 Diabetes. Even though I do ok with it, I wish I didn't have to live with diabetes the rest of my life. I hope you'll join me for my walk and if you can't join me, I hope you'll donate. Even a small donation helps!
