Approximately 12 times a day... 360 times a month... 4,380 times a year... That is how many times our son, Sam, has to poke his finger to check his blood sugar. Since Sam's diagnosis of type 1 diabetes on the 4th of July in 2009 at the age of 7, he has had more than 20,000 finger pokes on his growing hands.
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which Sam's body attacked his own insulin producing cells in his pancreas for no good reason at all. It was just bad luck--he didn't do anything to cause it. And now he needs insulin to live.He gets at least 6 injections of insulin every day--over 2,100 injections each year.
Every day is a balancing act of checking blood sugars, measuring food, counting carbs, monitoring exercise and dosing insulin. T1D doesn't sleep or go on vacation--it wakes us up every night and makes us pack extra supplies wherever Sam goes.
Despite this 24/7 challenge, Sam is doing great! He loves 6th grade, breakdancing, building legos and designing fish aquariums. His courage, independence and perseverance inspires and amazes us. But as long as T1D exists, his life will continue to be forever interrupted by this unpredictable balancing act of trying to do the work of his pancreas.
We do not want Sam's life to continue with T1D.We all want a cure! And that is why we will be participating in the JDRF's WALK TO CURE DIABETES on Saturday, February 22, 8:30 am at the Mall of America. The JDRF is the global leader in funding research for better treatments, prevention and ultimately a cure for T1D!More than 80% of JDRF expenditures support leading edge research towards their mission.TheJDRF's fundraising goal for 2014 is$1.7 million and this will be our 5th year walking with our family team, Sam's Star Walkers!
Our goal is to support Sam in his journey & to contribute to the JDRF's efforts. We are asking for your help by:
1. Joining us to walk on our team, SAM'S STAR WALKERS AND/OR
2. Making a donation to Sam's Star Walkers to support the JDRF (please go to Sam's fundraising page)
