Hello! This year, I'll be taking part in JDRF's Walk to Cure Diabetes, along with one-half million other walkers across the country, as we try to reach our goal of raising $89 million.
Logan was just recently diagnosed two years ago. It was Memorial Day weekend in 2011, It was May 28th and we went to the doctor for what we thought was a urinary tract infection only to be sent immediately to the hospital with the Diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes. After a 4 day hospital stay and trying to learn everything there was about Diabetes management we were sent home, this is when it really hits you as a parent. Watching Logan having to test his blood sugar up to 8 times a day with a finger stick then also having to have an insulin shot up to 4-5 times a day is very overwhelming. Our daily responsibilities also include monitoring his food intake, amount of excercise he is participating in and carbohydrate counting everything that he eats.
This is very hard because as a 9 year old boy, he wants to eat all the time and doesn't understand that he can't - his life depends on it. He is doing as well and has recently started using an insulin pump which makes it a little easier for him to eat without having to give an injection everytime...of course, he has his moments when he breaks down in tears because he is tired of doing this! So this is why we are participating in this walk and hope you will join us or make a donation so they can find a cure and hopefully Logan will not have to do these injections the rest of his life.
Type 1, or juvenile diabetes, is a devastating disease that affects millions of people, a large and growing percentage of them children.
There is some good news, though. JDRF is our best hope for finding a cure. It funds more type 1 diabetes research than any other charity worldwide and it's making progress along many promising paths toward better treatments and a cure.
Now, more than ever, you can make a crucial difference. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible? Together, we can make the cure a reality!
