Two years ago, Kevin and I watched as our little boy went through the scariest three days of his life. He was admitted to the hospital and told the only way he could survive was to spend the rest of his life taking multiple shots every single day. He would have to track his blood sugar through up to ten finger pricks a day and calculate the precise amount of insulin needed for every bite of food he put in his mouth to keep his blood sugar at a safe level. A miscalculation could be life-threatening.
And our brave little boy was stronger than we were. He amazed us. He still does. Every day.
Every day he makes himself bleed. Over and over. Without even flinching.
He walks around with a needle in his skin that stays there at all times and has to be reinserted every two to three days. It's attached to a tube that links to a pager-sized insulin pump he wears at all times. Even to sleep. And he rarely complains.
He misses recess. He misses school. He misses out on sleepovers and playdates. But still he doesn't miss out on living life to the fullest.
Keaton is our number 1 reason to walk each year.
I'll be taking part in this year's Walk to raise funds for Keaton and the millions of people living with and affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D). The money I raise will help JDRF fund critical research to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people's lives until no one has to fear developing the disease.
Type 1 diabetes is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin - a hormone essential to the ability to get energy from food. It strikes both children and adults suddenly and changes life as they know it forever. It cannot be prevented and there is no cure.
JDRF is the largest nongovernmental funder of T1D research and the only global organization with a strategic research plan to fight T1D. This science is complex and costly, and every dollar JDRF is able to direct toward research comes from donors like you.
Please support me and donate to my Walk fundraising campaign. Your gift will make a difference for millions of people affected by this devastating, life-threatening disease. It will make a difference in the life of my brave little boy who doesn't deserve to live like this. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible today?
Thank you for your support!
